With the 20t the boost is strong at 3000rpm but doesn’t come in with quite the same gusto. By comparison the 19t felt like it was either on or off under hard acceleration, at 3000 rpm the front wheels just wanted to break loose.
On the road, there are several ways in which the 20t responds differently, the most notable change being that boost onset is a little more gradual and less aggressive than the 19t. I chose to go with the 11 blade turbine which promises a slightly quicker boost onset than the 9 blade. From what I can gather there are no options on the 11 blade billet wheel. There are a couple of versions of the Kinugawa 20t available, you can get them with either a 9 or 11 blade turbine. Not a hard fix, just swapped it with the 19t unit. The only hitch came about as a result of Kinugawa’s uprated CBV, Compressor Bypass Valve, which is now a larger chunky looking unit and prevents the turbo from seating correctly.
Aem air fuel ratio gauge install install#
Those things aside, the feel and performance of the vehicle is now quite different and the changes are very positive.Īs far as the install was concerned the whole job took less than a couple of hours. I never did get a chance to put the 19t Ovlov onto a Dyno so I’ve no idea what the power gains are in terms of kilowatt output or nm torque gains with the 20t. A bit like that old saying nothing ventured, nothing gained. Having said that, perhaps more than anything else I was curious as to how the 20t could affect performance, and the reality is that I’d never know without giving it a go. I do have a fear around destroying the M56 gearbox, which would be a complete pain due to their rarety. I’ve thoroughly enjoyed my 19t time, the way the boost comes in with such a rush makes for a fun driving experience and this without putting the uprated mechanicals at too much risk.
In reality the changeover cost to fit the 20t was minimal given that the 19t unit are still in demand and readily sale able. To add to that, a suspicion around the promised performance gains from the 20t and the risk of minimal HP improvements left me wondering if I wanted to put in the dollars and effort. Wasn’t real sure that I’d ever get to write this post given my experience with the 19t has been such an enjoyable one.
